ESCE 421: Post 3

I am a very hands on and visual learner, I can learn by reading and lecture—but I learn best if the readings and lectures have stories to illustrate the concept. The chart we had was helpful- the one about the differences between a IFSP and a IEP. IEP’s are one of my favorite aspects about special education. I have a strong desire to touch as many individual lives as I can. I strive to be personable and work one on one, and I feel that IEP’s allow you to do that at the same time as being a teacher for 20+ other students. IEP’s allow you to recognizing the child’s strengths and see them presently and their potential. The goals are set in order to challenge them yet they are achievable goals with patience and effort. The main difference between the IEP and IFSP are what their purpose is. IEP are for primarily educationally purposes, how their disability is going to effect their success educationally and what accommodations we can make for them to succeed. IFSP are to meet the need of the individual child and the family.
Both IFSP and IEP’s can be made with the parents and child, the parents can express their concerns and the disability and it can be a team effort rather than all on the teacher to get the child to accomplish certain goals. I feel that I am prepared to apply the idea of both of these plans but I also need more clarification on how to write and follow the plans depending on individual children.

Weekly Quote:
“When you lack experience, revelation will take over.”- Quintin L Cook.

This quote was brought back to memory from 2 years ago. I was a new missionary with a brand new companion from Uganda, I felt inadequate as a missionary, let alone a trainer. Our mission went to a mission conference in Hyde Park Chapel and Quintin L Cook said that we need not fear because the lord is on our side. Whenever we are extended callings that is an opportunity to test our revelation and to test our faith, we are not given callings to prove that we have adequate skills and knowledge but an opportunity to rely on the lord. That was the most humbling experience because I knew that My relationship with Christ had already been so strengthened in those weeks that I was with my companion because I had no one else to rely on except for Christ. I feel that the Lord truly understands our strengths and weaknesses but he also knows our potential and he will put us in circumstances in order to strengthen us and discover our god given talents and abilities. Learning about different disabilities is also a very humbling experience. I have a passion for helping those with disabilities but I feel inadequate because I only know minimal about each disability. Christ will guide us and teach us with everyone one of our students and children, regardless of the difficulties and delays. We can be humble and be strengthened in Him. We can rely on the holy ghost and receive revelation.
